Rules and Strategy

The Basic Rules

The objective of King of the Log is to knock your opponent off the log twice.  Each opponent will be given a sack by the referee.  The choice of sacks is completely the referees and the bags will be mismatched on occasion to even the match. Each combatant must keep one hand behind their back unless a special exception is made by the referee.  All blows must strike the opponent below the neck and above the knees.  If both combatants fall of the log simultaneously the referee will may call a "draw" and the bout begins again.   These rules will be strictly enforced! (Violators may end up in the King's dungeon - not a nice place!.)

After defeating an opponent the victor remains on the log and plays for free in the next match.   King of the Log staff will find an opponent for the next match. If the victor wins three matches in a row they are declared "King" or "Queen" of the log and awarded a piece of log to hang around their neck.  Victors are have special privileges:

The Tournament

At 5:00 PM the royal tournament is held.   All routine matches cease and the winning Kings and Queens gather at the Log site. Winners are grouped into categories such as:

The tournament is single elimination and the final winner is crowned King or Queen of the day with a special award and a libation of their choice.

Strategy

Playing this game be not "catapult science" but strategy can help you win. The game is truly a mix of strength, balance and endurance. Some techniques we have seen work over the years:

Brute strength - yes its not pretty but sometimes the stronger player can win. If you want to train to use this technique work with weights on arm strength.

The Rock - Heavy players are difficult to dislodge but they must have good balance. To use this technique - eat a lot!

The Duck - if a blow is aimed high you can duck below it. You risk getting hit in the head but if your opponent misses cleanly they will fall off the log. Flexibility is the key to this maneuver.

The Rapid Cross Hand Attack - this is truly a technique for those with quickness. The combatant hits the opponent on one side and quickly changes the bag into the opposite hand and attacks on the other side. Martial arts training will help here.

Of course,  certain problems await consistent losers . . . . . .
